We recently participated in the ‘WISHLIST’, a project initiated by Terence Conran, Benchmark and AHEC (American Hardwood Export Council). 10 well known personalities in architecture / design were asked to commission 10 ‘younger design talents’ to design a piece for them.
The participant teams were: Terence Conran and Sebastian Cox, Alison Brooks and Felix De Pass, Norman Foster and Norie Matsumoto, Zaha Hadid and Gareth Neal, Amanda Levete and Win Assakul, Allen Jones and Lola Lely, John Pawson and Atelier Areti, Alex de Rijke and Barnby & Day, Richard Rogers and Xenia Moseley, Paul Smith and Nathalie de Leval.
The project consisted of the young designers designing and making an object for their commissioner out of American hardwood. This object was to be something the commissioner always wanted, but never found to buy. Our ‘commissioner’ John Pawson was interested in a series of items that are essential interior fittings, such as doors, light switches, etc.
We spent a week at Benchmark making the pieces with the immense help of the fantastic Benchmark carpenters there. The result can be seen at the V + A until the end of October.
The collection ‘Room’ includes a door and door handle made of white oak, a shelf made of walnut, a light switch and hooks made of walnut.
