Milan Design Week 2021
‘I’ll be your mirror’
Atelier Areti will participate in the upcoming interior design project ‘I’ll be your mirror’ by H+O during Milan Design Week this September. The designs span the entire period of Atelier Areti - from early 2009 works to the recently launched Elements series. The juxtaposition of pieces from several design periods developed naturally and in collaboration with Elisa Ossino Studio from a desire to use diverse and iconic pieces.
Works from the early period are characterized by black + white cone, line and globe shapes such as the Vertical one floor light with 6 cones arranged along a thin tube, the Bonhomme floor light with its large triangular foot and white globe, or the Black hole wall light with its distinctive white shape held by a black ‘X’. The iconic Plate and Sphere ceiling light with its round polished solid brass plate is also from this early period as is the Cone wall light composed of two cones connected via a joint.
The middle period is characterized by a very diverse range of sculptural pieces using an array of materials and shapes, such as illuminated tubes and surfaces, surfaces with cuts that allow light to shine through and solid carved wood in addition to classic materials as brushed brass.
Pieces from this middle period include delicate lights such as the two Motive pendants with a long undulating tube + globes and the three Sticks pendants with illuminating mobile sticks arranged along a thin tube. More solid and solemn pieces are represented by the Rotation floor light composed of two large tubes, one of which rotates, the Birch desk light with its characteristic cuts within the thick tube and the Oyster floor light with white globes placed inside a carved solid wood block. This middle period also includes playful lights with a strong iconic language such as the Lines and triangles floor light and Hat desk light.
We are showing 3 pieces from our most recent collection ‘Elements’. The Elements collection was conceived within the framework of a rigorous design exercise. The task we imposed on ourselves was to reinterpret the simple light composition of base + arm + illuminating element and find innovation within this restrictive frame. Our aim was to take one of these 3 elements - (1) the base (2) the arm (3) the illuminating element - and to transform it such that it would give this simple archetype a new identity. We wanted our intervention to be simple, yet powerful. In the archetype, the base is usually a round pillbox, the arm is usually a tube, and the illuminating element is either a globe, a cone or a strip. An example is the Array series - the base remains a simple round pillbox, the ‘arm’ remains a simple round tube, but the illuminating element is neither a globe, cone or strip as expected in the archetype, but a number of small tubes arranged along the main tube. In the Tube with globes and cones series again the elements of the base, arm and globe remain - but the composition differs from that of the archetype with the globe placed on the side of the tube rather than on the top. In the Tube and globe series, we are attaching an illuminated rotating tube to the classic ‘arm’ element.
The second defining concept of the Elements series is to use colour as an additional dimension to further express the novelty of each simple composition. It is the first time that we have used colour across all lights of one collection. The simplicity of the composition allows for colour to play a clarifying role. Adding colour to a design can either strengthen or weaken the design. Adding colour to an already complex shape might weaken the overall composition. In the Elements series, however, the strength of the composition is based on the new relationship between 3 simple elements and in this context colour serves to highlight this theme.
